Vaping 101 – PVs, Mods and Wicks

So, you’re just starting out with the vape life and you want to make sure you pick out the perfect e-cigarette. That’s great, you’re in for a wild ride. And Zeus is here to show you what’s what. Your first foray into the world of e-cigs may have been through a device that looks very similar to the old analog: a white stick with a glowing tip. You may have also noticed that this white stick didn’t really carry a great battery life with it, nor did it really pack the punch you were hoping for. Fret not, noobie! There are a ton of options to choose from, all of which are dedicated to getting you exactly what you want out of your vaping experience.

What is a personal vaporizer?

Basically? It’s what you’re using to vape! Your e-cig is a personal vaporizer, or a PV. It’s also called an electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS), but since you don’t necessarily have to have nicotine in your e-juice, we’ll go with the broader PV. The real heart of a PV, however, is the atomizer.

In the atomizer lives a wick that soaks up the e-juice that you introduce to it and brings it to the heating coil which creates the vapor that you inhale. There are a couple different kinds of atomizers, too. Regular atomizers require you to drip the e-juice onto the wick directly while cartomizers allow you to put a cartridge of e-liquid into the PV. Clearomizers have clear tanks that you fill with e-juice, and they don’t include the poly-fil material that cartomizers do, which means the flavors from your e-juice will also be clearer! Clearomizers can have their heating coil on the top or the bottom which has its own set of pros and cons. But, basically, you’re just going to want to decide how close you want the heat to be to your mouth.

Do I want to get a mod?

Mods are probably best left to the professionals. If you’re just starting out in the vape world, you probably don’t wanna get too involved in mods just yet. But, if you’re curious, there are plenty of resources online that you can browse through. One major advantage of having a mod is that you can get into the e-cig and change out broken parts if you need to. Otherwise, if your factory-made e-cig breaks you’re probably going to have to replace the whole thing (which is not healthy for the budget!). That being said, if you’re not experienced with them, you can risk being shocked by the battery, or even having your e-cig explode in your face! You chose the vape life to get away from fire, not start another one! Don’t let this deter you from exploring the possibilities, though, by any means. Just be careful.

Which wick is worth it?

There are two basic kinds of wick that you can use in your e-cig: Silica and cotton. There’s nothing really wrong with silica, but the consensus seems to be that cotton gives you better flavor, is dirt cheap, and is easy to work with. You can make your own cotton wicks by picking up some sterile cotton balls at CVS and just rolling them up into something like a rope. If the cotton you get isn’t sterile, make sure it’s at least organic, boil it for a while to get all the impurities out, then let it dry before using it in your atomizer.

So, that’s it! Hopefully, after reading through this you have a clearer understanding of what kind of PV you want to get. Remember that, above all, you just wanna have fun and flavor. If something’s not working for you, there are a million different ways you can change it! Let us know what your experience is like picking out your first PV.
